Amazon

Amazon started as an online bookstore in Jeff Bezos's garage in 1994 and has since grown into one of the largest companies in the world. Today it sells just about everything — consumer goods, cloud computing through AWS, streaming through Prime Video, smart home devices through Alexa and Ring, and grocery retail through Whole Foods. Andy Jassy has run the company since 2021. In recent years the company has drawn consistent complaints about lost returns, delayed refunds, and disputes involving third-party sellers.

What you need to know about Amazon

Amazon's customer service can be hit or miss. It used to be that you could email Jeff Bezos directly and someone would actually respond. That's largely not the case anymore, and some issues have become genuinely recurring — problems with product returns, incomplete refunds (repeatedly), and refunds sent to the wrong card. We're watching it closely.

We resolved a case where Amazon tried to keep a customer's money after UPS lost the return. In another, Amazon lost a return and left the customer with the bill. A customer whose steam mop broke found that Amazon wouldn't honor the warranty and charged a restocking fee on top of it. Amazon promised a price match three times, then refused to follow through. After one customer returned the wrong order that Amazon sent, Amazon refused to refund him. Amazon promised a replacement Christmas tree and never delivered. And one customer found that two-factor authentication stopped working after getting a new phone. Amazon verification kept failing for a customer who tried to return a VCR.

Amazon customer service policies

Amazon's privacy notice was last updated December 31, 2025. It covers how Amazon and its affiliates collect and use your personal information, name, address, payment details, browsing history, and device data, across its sites, apps, stores, and devices. Amazon says it doesn't sell your personal information, though it may share it with service providers or hand it over when legally required. If you're in California or certain other states, you've got additional rights under state privacy laws.

Amazon loyalty program

Amazon doesn't have a traditional points-based loyalty program. Amazon Prime costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year and gets you free two-day and same-day delivery on eligible items, plus access to Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, and Amazon Photos. If you haven't used any Prime benefits in your current billing period, you can get a full refund when you cancel. If you carry the Amazon Prime Visa or Amazon Visa, you'll earn reward points you can put toward purchases through the Shop with Points program at checkout.

Yes, with conditions. If you cancel and haven't used any Prime benefits in your current billing period, you'll get a full refund within three to five business days.

There's also a separate situation worth knowing about. If you signed up for Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, you may be entitled to money back under a $2.5 billion FTC settlement. The FTC found that Amazon enrolled people in Prime without their clear consent and made it intentionally hard to cancel. Eligible customers could receive up to $51. A lot of people got automatic payments in late 2025 — if you didn't, you can file a claim at subscriptionmembershipsettlement.com. Notices went out by email and postcard in early 2026, and you have 180 days from your notice date to file. Amazon didn't admit wrongdoing.

To cancel Prime at any time, go to amazon.com/primecentral.

Charged for cancelled orders. I am cancelling Amazon! I had previously cancelled two Subscribe and Save orders by the deadline of June 14th. I don't know why the subscription had been created, but I cancelled the orders and deleted the subscribe and save window for June 20th. I don't know how it was created in the first place. There are a lot of glitches in Amazon's software, so you don't know that there is a problem right away. I went…

Amazon Web Services form the backbone of ICE's surveillance tools in arresting our neighbors. I refuse to spend one dime with Amazon or Whole Foods

Impossible to setup a sellers account, worst service ever, Amazon will be replaced just like Ebay was.

The public need to be warned that YOU CANNOT SEND AN EMAIL TO AMAZON. Disgusting business practice which needs broadcasting to the public. Legal professionals take note

Customer service is complete trash. Complete zero help with my problem. It’s been 4 days …. Amazon is complete dog shit company that wants your money and then we’ll run once they have .

Amazon’s security protection is awful. A hacker got into my account, changed my phone number, and locked me out, yet I was the one stuck unable to fix it while the unauthorized number stayed on my account. That is completely unacceptable. There should be immediate protection when a customer reports fraud, not delays that leave the hacker with continued access. For a company this large, the lack of fast security response is disgusting. I no longer feel safe trusting Amazon…

Kenneth in Washington DC was suppose to be a supervisor. But he kept interrupting me and wouldn't listen to me. And he said he couldn't help me create a new account. Cause the number I have belonged to another account. Well I can't help that. I just got this number today. He wanted me to call my cell phone company and change my number. I was like that is NOT going to happen. Why should I? How dare them ask…

Zero Stars. Complete trash delivery from a den of liars from top to bottom. 5 deliveries....not a single one even close to on time, much less even by the day promised....and nothing but bull lip service from the barely English Speaking foreign call center who merely read a script to you and solve zero problems.  I'm done. .

Amazon has been nothing but issues. Be on guard with the 3rd party sellers. These are not guaranteed as items being sold. Also, prime doesn’t cover 3rd party returns. That means you will pay for these items to be returned. 3rd party can refuse your reasoning for returns. Getting ahold of customer services is an entire process. It takes multiple tries and options to get through to anyone. They use AI and it makes a very long drawn out process…

Mr GarethMarch 13, 2026

Amazon were my favourite retailer, been with them since 2007 and a prime customer for a long time on and off. However, too many returns had them block my account without any warning. Disgusting way or treating a loyal customer.

John EscandonMarch 13, 2026

In spite of me building a box to put packages in and a sign that says put packages in the box, Amazon drivers insist on putting packages on my doorstep in full view of the street! I don't have this problem with fedex, ups,or the postal service just Amazon! Drivers are either blind, illiterate or just don't give a damn!😡😡😡

RachelMarch 6, 2026

I have been a Prime member for about 15 years, and have been using Amazon for longer than that. They have resolved almost all of my issues in that time. While I don't like that customer support by phone has been shipped over seas, on the whole, I really can't complain much.
