Impressions of Hilton Head, S.C.

Our time in Hilton Head has come and gone quickly. Here are a few images from our trip, including a visit to the Coastal Discovery Museum At Honey Horn, a memorable lunch at Skull Creek Boathouse, and our stay in a ResortQuest condo.

You can find more pictures on our Flickr page. And there’s even more on our family travel site, Away is Home.

Our family has been vacationing at Hilton Head for almost 30 years and it is our favorite spot in the world (and yes, we are fortunate to have traveled extensively).  I caution first-timers against vacationing there during the 4th of July period however as that is the very height of the season and the roads and restaurants are very crowded at that time.  There are 51 other delightful weeks in which to enjoy the island and it’s many delightful areas however.

Please don’t get me wrong.  Hilton Head is a gorgeous place with lots of golf and tennis,  spectacular landscaping and beautiful beaches.  My MIL has a time share there, and we have gone there for the last 14 years.  But not this time.  Hilton Head is just not my idea of what a beach resort should be.  I prefer a place with a boardwalk, actual waves, things to do at night, that I can drive to comfortably in one day and doesn’t have stormtroopers with arrest powers at the gated communities.  Don’t even get me started about the oppressive heat, “guest workers”, miles long Saturday traffic jams, ridiculously restricted zoning and the alligators. And BTW, make sure not to go the week of the golf tournament either, unless you were going for that purpose.
