I wouldn't say it's a trend for all islands. This honestly makes sense for Martinique since it's legally a French department; same legal status as mainland France just physically further away. A direct flight from Martinique to Paris is a domestic flight, meaning no passport checks. This represents a security vulnerability where someone could illegally enter the Shengen mainland area without a passport or legal authorization.
