I booked a hotel room on 3/13/20 and paid for the travel insurance. When I contacted AIG for my refund after realizing the seriousness of the pandemic, they told me the pandemic was declared on 3/10/20 and I reserved on 3/13/20 therefore I was not eligible for my refund. They never sent me a denial letter or a way to appeal the decision.

Unless it was a CFAR (cancel for any reason) policy, insurance doesn't cover a known event. Also, even for those that reserved before it became a known event were not covered for canceling because they were afraid of the pandemic.

They are correct. But you may be eligible for a credit for a future trip. Contact them and ask.

I agree with Posts #2 & #3, but also ... You mentioned that you were told some things and never received a denial letter. To get a denial letter, you need to formally make an insurance claim. If you only talked with an agent on the phone, that's not making a claim.
