In 1975, Juan Francisco Ochoa opened a small stand on the west coast of Mexico in Guasave. It was called El Pollo Loco, or “The Crazy Chicken” in Spanish. The chicken, which was marinated in a blend of citrus and spices then flame grilled and hand cut, quickly became very popular and word spread. In 1980, the first El Pollo Loco opened in the U.S. on Alvarado Street in Los Angeles.
El Pollo Loco is a fast food chain of restaurants that serves flame-grilled chicken, tortillas, salsa, guacamole, pinto beans, burritos, tamales, taco al Carbon, taquitos, soup and salads, and soft drinks. Also featured in each location is a salsa bar. The chain is 99% privately owned by Trimaran Capital Partners. Some locations are franchised.
