TSA orders pat-down of all passengers during boarding

The Transportation Security Administration has ordered airlines to perform a manual pat-down screening of all passengers on inbound international flights, “concentrating on upper legs and torso,” according to a memo sent to US Airways employees. The search must be performed by airline personnel during the boarding process, in addition to the regular screening at the checkpoint.

The TSA, meanwhile, has said nothing about its new security measures — either on its site, blog or Twitter feed — in the last 24 hours. However, an administration official confirmed earlier today that the president had ordered a review of airline screening procedures.

Here’s the full text of the memo, which was sent to crewmembers this morning:

Due to the recent event on Delta’s flight 253 AMS-DTW, airlines are being asked to use a best faith effort to implement, as soon as possible, the following security items on international flights arriving into the United States. We expect additional information/changes from the TSA to be disseminated within the next 24 hours.

I. BOARDING GATE

A. The aircraft operator or authorized air carrier representative must ensure all passengers are screened at the boarding gate during the boarding process using the following procedures. These procedures are in addition to the screening of all passengers at the screening checkpoint.

* 1. Perform thorough pat-down of all passengers at boarding gate prior to boarding, concentrating on upper legs and torso.
* 2. Physically inspect 100 percent of all passenger accessible property at the boarding gate prior to boarding, with focus on syringes beingtransported along with powders and/or liquids.
* 3. Current restrictions regarding liquids, aerosols, and gels will be strictly adhered to.
* 4. Crewmembers working the flight and those deadheading in uniform are exempt from the above screening measures.

II. IN FLIGHT

A. During flight, the aircraft operator must ensure that the following procedures are followed:

* 1. Passengers must remain in seats beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination.
* 2. Passenger access to carry-on baggage is prohibited beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination.
* 3. Disable passenger cabin SATCOM capability. Any need for air to ground communication will be coordinated through the flight deck. GPS generated moving maps in the cabin will also be disabled. Attempts to access the moving map display will lock up the screen requiring a Flight Attendant reset to access other components of the IFE program.
* 4. While over U.S. airspace, flight crew may not make any announcement to passengers concerning flight path or position over cities or landmarks.
* 5. Passengers may not conceal their hands under blankets, pillows, or personal belongings held on their lap beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination. Pillows and blankets may be stowed under the seat in front or in overhead bins. Customers may retain any reading material issued by the Company and/or a personal book. They may also retain a jacket or sweater as long as their hands are not concealed by the garment.

Please contact your dispatcher or Chief Pilot Office if you have any questions concerning the above items.

Lyle Hogg
Vice President Flight Operations

I’ve reported some of this information already, but the pat-down order is a new one. I wasn’t aware that crewmembers were trained to handle pat-down screenings. This should be interesting.

If anyone reading this has experienced the “100 percent pat-down” screening rule firsthand, .

Ordinary passengers came to the rescue on a flight to Detroit when a terrorist, who slipped through a security system with more holes than a 5 pound hunk of baby Swiss, was allowed to board despite numerous warning signs.
We need to get more, pardon the expression, ‘bang for the buck’ from our airport security systems.
We are still going through procedures like taking off our shoes because a terrorist lights a fuse coming out of his shoe and hoped no one will notice.
This ignorant act brought security to a new low; your feet!
They’re inspecting our shoes; what’s next, looking at the labels and dividing us in the designer or one size fits all sections?
Maybe people who are thrilled by shoes are lining up for this job. It has got to be one of the most exciting fantasy fulfilling jobs masquerading as real work.

There are people out there that enjoy the power of saying to a complete stranger, “Would you take off those black patent leather pumps with the red bow, I want to ‘inspect’ them. You say, “Oh the ones that just about cover my feet because 90 per cent of the shoe is the strap?’
“Yes” they say, I want to see if there’s anything hidden between the shoe and your foot that could be used as a weapon.”
You’re thinking, “Sure, that would be the odor because I’ve been standing in line for an hour and a half.”
Because of ease of booking, many travelers have used the internet and marginalized the travel agency business.
How can we help this industry and improve health care before the politicians make more of a mess than they already have? It’s only a tiny leap of faith to let travel agencies sell limited health policies.
The best part of this plan is that it includes some vacation destination travel as well because travel agencies already have a strategic alliance with your local airport and here’s how it works.

Some airports are testing security X-ray equipment that performs full body and CT scans of all passengers. The lines may be longer, but the flip side of this exercise is that a valuable medical function could be performed with just a little boost in power. These full body scans can see metal objects under clothes, so let’s juice up the current and look a little deeper. How easy would it be to cross train the TSA personnel as EMT’s! They’re going to pat down a certain number of passengers anyway, so don’t be alarmed if they pat your back and ask you to cough at the same time. Waiting in line at the airport is a lot shorter that waiting in the doctor’s office and there’s less coughing and hacking.

Passenger/patients who don’t have decent medical insurance need only buy a ticket to Orlando for $69 and get a full body medical scan worth hundreds of dollars for free.
The airlines don’t care where you go as long as you’re properly screened. They just add a printer to the unit and bingo, extra revenue for the airlines and an inexpensive medical scan for you.
Just stick your head in the machine and get a full set of uppers and lowers instead of paying $75 for an x-ray at your dental office.
Airports across the country are testing a range of other equipment. Some airports do facial scanning. If something can be scanned, it can be printed. Simply increase the power of the machine, print on high gloss paper and get a full set of wallet size and an 8 by 10 for the mantel.

Think of it, frequent flier miles, and a full set of wallet size pictures for the family.
Now if we can only work on the cavity search.

    New TSA rules:

    1. All passengers must board naked.
    2. All passengers must have ankles and wrist bound.
    3. All passengers must be anally probed and cleared.
    4. All women must be vaginally probed and cleared.
    5. All children’s mouths must be taped shut.
    6. No luggage allowed. ( buy your needed items in Wal-mart’s terminal shop).

I want to fly safer and I will submit to anything for the price of safety!

I can’t believe this. Is this real? A physical pat down of all passengers seems so invasive. I absolutely see the need for tight security, and I can almost see it going to the extent of a pat down, but just to say it seems too far. I’m glad that isn’t my job.

Well, the terrorists have taken our freedom- or are we giving it to them?
