Crime Wave Hits Brazil Visitors
Brazilian authorities sought ways to make Rio de Janiero tourist spots safer on Tuesday amid sharp criticism of police after 24 muggings over a holiday weekend. Visitors from Germany, Italy and Argentina were among the victims in the four-day spree. A 61-year-old Japanese woman remained hospitalized after being stabbed on Friday while trying to flee from robbers. "Naturally, these numbers are not normal and something has got to change," said a spokeswoman for the state security secretariat. Security officials were meeting on Tuesday to discuss ways to improve policing at tourist areas. "Whatever new measures the authorities decide to take now, they should have been taken long time ago," said Alfredo Lopes de Souza, president of the Rio de Janeiro Hotel Industry Association. Airport Award Turns into Food Fight

But before airport vendors had time to celebrate, a restaurant and food company group attacked the survey's authors as shills for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or in their words, "anti-meat, pro-vegetarian nutrition zealots." The restaurateurs' evidence: a nutritionist who worked on the study regularly appeared "in various states of undress" in PETA protests. Sun-Sentinel | Posted 6:45 a.m.

Are Low Fares Hurting Middle Class?
Wal-Mart has drawn a lot of attention for its low wages, measly benefits and relentlessly anti-union posture. But Wal-Mart is just a symbol of a larger trend that is dragging down the standard of living for American workers. Just consider the once-prestigious airline industry, where workers who in the past made a very good, middle-class living are now giving back billions of dollars in wages, pensions and health benefits. ATA: 'Record' Year For US Air Travel - U.S. airlines are on track to carry a record 685 million people this year with low-fares driving the substantial surge in travel, a leading industry group said on Wednesday. The Air Transport Association, the chief lobbying group for domestic carriers, expects year-end travel to boost the final total. Reuters l | Posted 7 a.m.

American Removes Pillows From Flights - Say goodbye to pillows on American Airlines' MD-80 jets. The Fort Worth-based airline this week removed pillows from its 334 MD-80s in a move expected to save time and money by enabling workers to clean the cabins faster, spokesman Tim Wagner said. "It will streamline our cabin service," he said. AP | Posted 7:05 a.m.
