Paris
Airport Collapse Kills Four
Part of a roof
collapsed at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle international airport near
Paris early Sunday, killing at least four people and triggering a search
for survivors under the rubble, fire officials said. Slabs of concrete
and metal crashed to the floor of departure lounge 2E at about
7 a.m., trapping people who were waiting for flights and spreading the
rubble over yards of the lounge. A Reuters photographer on the scene said
ambulances and fire vehicles rushed to and from the terminal as the injured
were taken to hospital and rescue workers searched for survivors feared
trapped under the rubble. "The preliminary toll is four dead,"
a fire spokesman said. Private LCI television said more than 10 others
were also hurt and one of its reporters said the death toll was five.
That figure was not immediately confirmed. Reuters

Scotsman: Terminal
was only 11 months old
Charles de Gaulle is said to be one of the worst airports in Europe,
as I pointed out in
a recent story. But unsafe? That I hadn't heard. I don't think anyone
expected this kind of thing to happen in an 11-month-old terminal.

Air
Fare Hike Unravels Again
A move
by several U.S. airlines to raise fares this week is doomed for failure
because carriers are afraid of losing customers to low-priced competitors,
the chief executive of Frontier Airlines said. Continental Airlines
led the way on fare increases of $10 to $20 per flight earlier this week,
and the other major carriers such as United Airlines and Delta matched
the price hike. But discount carrier JetBlue Airways, which competes with
the major airlines on various routes, has already said it will not match
the fare increase. Reuters

I've posted the blog on Sunday in order to put my PC in boxes and pack
it into the truck. See you on the other side. Posted 7:10
