California Senate Passes Car GPS Bill
A bill by Assemblywoman Ellen Corbett to prohibit the improper use of electronic surveillance equipment by rental car companies has gained approval from the Senate Judiciary Committee. Assembly Bill 2840 earned support from the committee last week. The bill bans car rental companies from using electronic surveillance technology to track and monitor renters in order to impose fines or surcharges. According to the bill, information from navigation equipment could only be used in certain legitimate circumstances such as when the renter requests navigational assistance or to track stolen vehicles. I think California's new law will eventually spread to other states. Car rental companies have no business profiting from tracking systems designed to protect their cars. Send us your comments.

TSA Complaints Going Unheard
Having already suffered the indignity of having their suitcases pawed through and their valuables pilfered at the airport, some victims of theft have been unable to even register their complaints with proper authorities. Instead, they have been bounced back and forth between officials with individual airlines and those with the Transportation Security Administration, with each side blaming the other. TSA officials ought to be aware that even air travelers who haven't had their items stolen are likely to be frustrated these days. Those who have had their valuables looted are going to be more upset, of course, and they should have their complaints heard by employees determined to give them some measure of satisfaction. Nevertheless, theft victims have described the TSA theft claims process as generally unhelpful. (Editorial). Times-Picayune | Posted 6:45 a.m.

Diet Detective: Watch For Plane Gain
Flying is the most-hectic, unpredictable method of travel. As a result of the increased stress, our rush-rush mentality and poor planning, what we eat often ends up being the last thing we think about. How many times have you said, ''I'll just eat something when I get there'' or ``I'll eat on the plane''? It's that lack of planning that costs us when it comes to weight control. To make matters worse, airlines rarely provide meals these days, and because of tightened security, we're spending more time in airports where most food choices aren't conducive to healthy eating. • And finally ... if you're still thinking of taking an impromtu trip over this Fourth of July weekend, be warned. By all indications, this is going to be the busiest holiday weekend for travel. Ever. Let me know. Posted 7:10 a.m. | Send us your comments.
